Each year on the first Saturday in May, the Pilates world celebrates Pilates Day.
Established and promoted by the Pilates Method Alliance(R) (PMA(R)), Pilates Day is an annual, international community event celebrated via a network of varied, innovative, and high quality grassroots Pilates events accessible and affordable for all. The Pilates Day mission is to foster the public's appreciation and awareness of the Pilates Method and to support Pilates practitioners and studio owners in introducing new members of their communities to the Pilates Method. The Pilates Method Alliance promotes and supports the development of Pilates Day events in communities around the world.
Practiced faithfully, Pilates yields numerous benefits. Increased lung capacity and circulation through deep, healthy breathing is a primary focus. Strength and flexibility, particularly of the abdomen and back muscles, coordination -- both muscular and mental, are key components in an effective Pilates program. Posture, balance, and core strength are all heartily increased. Bone density and joint health improve, and many experience positive body awareness for the first time. Pilates teaches balance and control of the body, and that capacity spills over into other areas of one's life.
The PMA encourages everyone to experience this life-enhancing exercise method. Pilates Day events provide a wide range of opportunities for members of the public to have their first experience of the Pilates Method. All are welcome! Events are scheduled all over the USA, as well as in Australia, Canada, Estonia, Italy, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
Pilates Day is a program of the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA), and Pilates Day events are produced and hosted by PMA members. For a list of scheduled events visit www.PilatesDay.com

The American Fertility Association's Manicures & Martinis Infertility Prevention Program is a national series of events dedicated to young women who are not quite ready to conceive, but might one day want to have a child. Fertility experts will lead conversations about how to prevent infertility whenever possible, the reality of the "biological clock," the harmful effects of STD's and environmental toxins, and the differences between gynecologists and reproductive endocrinologists. Attendees will enjoy complimentary manicures and martinis, or a "Fertiltini" -- an all-organic, alcohol-free cocktail.
The AFA's Executive Director, Ken Mosesian, says, "Through post-event surveys, young women are telling us how much they have learned about the basics of reproduction, especially about their biological clocks, about the importance of preventing STD's, and about birth control. One participant said, 'Finally, some answers.'"

Ever since Woodrow Wilson's official proclamation of Mother's Day in 1914, nervous husbands and eager children have struggled to find the perfect gift for Mom.
One of the most traditional and appreciated ways to celebrate Mom is to shower her with gorgeous flowers. And according to a recent survey, some of Mom's favorite plants include gardenias, hydrangeas, and miniroses. Topping the list of favorite blooms are lilies, gerbera daisies and roses.
When buying a beautiful bouquet for mom, show off your smarts and give her these handy tips from the floral and gift giving experts at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM:
• Arrange the flowers in a deep vase filled with cool water, and then mix in the floral preservative provided by the florist.
• Remove all leaves from the stem that fall below the waterline in the vase, as they will promote bacterial growth.
• Use a knife or shears to cut an inch from the bottom of the stem on an angle while holding it under water. This allows the stem to draw in the water, instead of air.
• Keep cut flowers and arrangements looking fresh by adding cool water to the vase every day and keeping it in a cool spot. Always keep the vase full, and change the water every three to four days.
Mother's Day is a great opportunity for the kids to get creative, too. All moms appreciate a personalized gift, and they will love this pseudo flower arrangement: a bouquet of handprints made with lots of love. Here's how it's done from Celebrations.com, a Web site that offers expert advice and fun, simple planning tools for your next party:
• You will need colorful paper, scissors, pens or colored pencils, green craft paint (optional), small vase, craft glue, floral foam, and for the stems use either small dowels, wooden skewers or straws.
• Trace and cut out each child's handprints using different colors of paper. Make as many as you want. Ask kids to write one thing he or she loves about Mom on each handprint. Paint dowels or skewers with green paint, if desired. Glue handprints to the front of stems. Put florist foam in the vase and insert flowers. Place decorative grass or candies around the base of the flowers to cover the florist foam.
Go to Celebrations.com for more inspiration for life's most important celebrations, and visit 1-800-FLOWERS.COM for a beautiful selection of gifts including the Mother's Embrace arrangement.
Lilies, gerbera daisies and roses are among American mothers' favorite blooms.

The signature drink, which sells for $3.49, including free refills, debuted in January 2008 and has ignited a passionate following of guests at more than 240 restaurants located in 20 states. Each Made-From-Scratch Strawberry Lemonade includes a freshly squeezed lemon, fresh sliced strawberry and strawberry puree among other ingredients. In anticipation of the big giveaway, O’Charley’s delivered new citrus squeezers to their restaurants and will call in extra team members to turn approximately 8,000 lemons per hour into lemonade on April 22. The company estimates that 16,000 strawberries per hour will be hand cut that day in their restaurants.

The newly released California Road Trips 2009 gets visitors exploring the Golden State.
The annual guide, produced by the California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC) and Sunset Custom Media Solutions, continues to provide detailed driving maps that take readers to some of the best insider spots in California. But consumers will find a difference this year - an emphasis on getting out of the car to enjoy those unique locales.
Readers are encouraged to stretch their legs and wander Calico Ghost Town, a former silver-mining boomtown, where authenticity mixes with a little kitsch in the Deserts Region. In the Inland Empire Region, biking the scenic trails surrounding the pine-fringed Lake Arrowhead is a must-do in the warmer months. In the San Diego County Region, travelers can snorkel, getting up close and personal with harmless leopard sharks in La Jolla, while in Santa Barbara, part of the Central Coast Region, they can walk the gardens at Old Mission Santa Barbara, which offer peace and tranquility during a busy vacation. The High Sierra Region encourages travelers to take a watery tour by renting a kayak to discover the tufa towers bordering Mono Lake.
In keeping with its new sustainable theme, California Road Trips 2009 also recommends riding the green trains at Disneyland, which now run on biodiesel, or cutting down on emissions by touring Huntington Beach by foot-power (your cab driver's) with Blue Water Pedicab in the Orange County Region. San Francisco's California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, in the San Francisco Bay Area Region, offers up a one-of-a-kind experience and is the "greenest" museum in the world. Visitors who have come to shop can also do their part and slip into stylish, eco-friendly shoes made with recycled materials and natural dyes at Santa Monica's El Naturalista's, located in the Los Angeles County Region.
Another new feature to the guide is the "3 Free & Easy" box located in each of the 12 regional California driving itineraries. In the Central Valley Region, travelers are encouraged to check out the Fresno Art Museum - free admission every Sunday. The Gold Country Region's drive recommends Columbia State Historic Park, where the town's shopkeepers still dress like it's 1849. Where's the best spot to view the Pacific Ocean? In the North Coast Region, it's the northernmost Sea Ranch access, providing panoramic views from the bluffs. And what better way to end the day than gazing from the Shasta Cascade Region's Sundial Bridge as the sun sets over Redding and the Sacramento River?
California Road Trips 2009 is available in the June edition of Sunset magazine. You can also get a copy by calling 1-877-TOP-DRIVES or download it for free via the CTTC Web site at www.visitcalifornia.com/visitorsguide.
Free SAT/ACT Practice Tests Can Boost Eligibility for College Acceptances and Increase Chances for Scholarships and Financial Aid
For cash-strapped families with college-bound children, getting financial aid has become as essential as college admission. Since most colleges use the SAT or ACT to qualify applicants for admission as well as in awarding grants and scholarships, higher scores on these tests are doubly important in these tough economic times. To help students do their best on these exams and to encourage them to create a timely and focused study plan, The Princeton Review has scheduled National Testing Day on April 25, when teens nationwide can experience a full-length practice test for the SAT or ACT and receive a detailed score analysis.
Let SimpleTuition find the right student loan for you.
"Taking full-length SAT and ACT practice tests motivates students to take charge of their own college planning," said Robert Franek, VP/Publisher, The Princeton Review. "Students who experience simulated testing conditions clearly understand the focus and stamina needed for a four-hour high-stakes test -that's half the battle. Additionally, for every test taker, The Princeton Review provides a comprehensive free score analysis. It reveals where students need to focus their time and efforts by pinpointing areas of weakness and it gives them strategies they can use to improve their performance on specific types of questions."
The Princeton Review practice tests and score reports are completely cost-free, and stress-free, while students generally pay around $45 to take an actual SAT or ACT. In addition to saving money, the practice tests help students become familiar with the test formats, pacing, question types, and physical and mental demands of the SAT and ACT.
On April 25, students can also choose to take the Princeton Review Assessment (PRA). The PRA is a unique four-hour diagnostic test created by The Princeton Review with sample questions from both the SAT and ACT. It is designed to reveal whether a student may do better on one college entrance exam than another. Many students who have taken the Princeton Review PRA have said that getting a chance to experience the different styles of both tests was ultimately helpful in choosing whether to take both tests or focus on just one.
The free SAT, ACT and PRA practice tests are open to all high school students. Space is limited and reservations are required. For more information, call 800-2REVIEW or visit: PrincetonReview.com/NationalTestingDay.aspx.
