Save Your Lips: Kiss Sun Damage Good-bye

(NAPSI)-It's important to give more than mere lip service to protecting your lips from the sun all year round. Lips need daily protection from the effects of sun exposure and harsh weather; their health and beauty depend on it.

The Danger

According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, lips have almost no melanin (the color derived from tiny blood vessels beneath the skin), so it is important to protect them from sun's harmful UV rays. The ultraviolet rays can damage the look and health of lips.

They act like baby oil for the lips, directing damaging UV rays right to the area you're trying to protect. An opaque lipstick will provide better protection. Try to find one you like with an SPF rating of 15 or higher. If you're wedded to the wet look, apply the colored lipstick first, then top with a gloss for shine.

What to Look For

Get Cheap Spa Treatments at Beauty Schools

In a down economy, pampering yourself with manicures, pedicures and spa treatments tend to be removed from your roster of activities. Fortunately, there are ways to save on these wonderful services at a teaching school near you.

Did you know that beauty schools offer really cheap services to the general public? The prices are more than half off what you would pay at a salon. Beauty schools have training days when they allow real customers to come in to receive services from student nearing completion of their program. So the person providing your service is someone who is almost ready to get their license (no newbies.)

The beauty school service days are run by one of the program directors who oversees each student as they are working. Students are usually measured on technique and execution as well as personality. Sometimes the client (you) is asked to fill out a survey which can help them assess the student and give them further instruction on a particular service.

I have received treatments at a beauty school in New Jersey owned by an upscale spa. The beauty school is not in the same building as the spa, however, the students are trained as if they are working at the spa. They even use the same products as the spa. I have gotten a great facial at a beauty school for just $25. I also had a manicure and pedicure for $10. The prices are really great.

If you are particular about your hair, I would not go to a beauty school for color. After all, you do not want to be a guinea pig. But if you need a simple cut, blow and style - you can get that for just $20-25 at most beauty schools. This is a great way to pamper yourself and pay a minimal price.

Warning: do not expect to be in the lap of luxury. Facials are usually in a semi-private setting with a curtain between you and other clients. They may or may not have spa music on and you might here some talking. The instructor might even come in to see how the student is doing with you. If you need REAL luxury, spend the extra bucks to get a real spa treament.

Also if you like massages, find a local massage school. For about $30, you can get an hour massage from a student. Again, these are usually in a semi-private setting. But the place that I have gone to tries hard to be as spa-like as possible. Don't expect it to perfect each time. I once had a student that was literally sweating on me. It was really gross, but I called him on it. I made sure in his evaluation that he pick up a sweatband for future clients. If you do not mind an occassional crudely performed massage student, save about $50 and check out the student training days at a massage therapy school. Warning, the training days book up quick (hello everyone wants a cheap massage) so call ahead and get on the schedule.
