Product Tip: Canon SX20 IS is a Quality Digital Camera

I bought a digital camera in 2005 that was great for then... it was a 4 megapixel camera and I probably paid about $245 for it.

Flash forward to 2010 and you can get a get an 8 megapixel camera such as the Sanyo Xacti VPC-S885 Blue 8MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom, 2.7" LCD, Face Detection for $59! Times have certainly changed.

So recently, I started researching Canon cameras and I was specifically looking for one that shoots video but allows you to zoom in and out. The camera that came up was the Canon Powershot SX20 IS 12.1MP Digital Camera + 8GB Deluxe Accessory Kit.

Budget-Savvy Home: Spruce Up On A Shoe String

Even a bare-bones decorating budget doesn't mean you can't give your home a fresh look.

"One of the easiest and least expensive ways to spruce up your home is to subtract what's in it," says Ginny Bean, publisher and founder of Ginny's catalog and Ginnys.com.

Here are a few of Bean's low-cost, high-impact tips for giving your home a lift:

Clear the clutter. Clear stacks of books and magazines on coffee tables and throws on couches. Put books on shelves and magazines in a rack or basket. Tuck the throws in the linen closet and pack away knickknacks for a few months.

Rearrange the furniture. Try floating furniture in the room rather than hugging the walls. It's a great trick for making the space feel different and less structured. Swap out an item in your living room for one in your bedroom, or slide something from the kitchen into the dining room.

Spring for some color. A few touches of bright, saturated color can refresh any room and distract the eye from items that might be a bit dated. There's no need to break the bank. Think about pillows and placemats to incorporate the colors you want.

Accessorize. You can change your towels, shower curtain and bath accessories for under $100. Candles are another way to create an inviting room environment. Seasonal scents such as lavender and lemon leaf add color, freshness and intoxicating fragrance.

Go sheer. Replace heavy draperies with bright, lightweight curtains or sheers.

Remake your bed. Put away that heavy comforter or quilt in favor of a lighter bedspread. Mix and match solid-colored fitted and top sheets with pillowcases in various patterns. Tuck the top sheet tightly all around and fold the edge at the head of the bed over your coverlet or blanket. Fold your bedspread down to rest across the foot of the bed. Add accent pillows to create an inviting, luxurious-looking bed.

Assess your artwork. Is your wall decor light and bright or warm and cozy? Go for light and bright wherever possible.

Plant an idea. Put at least one houseplant in every room. Fill a low planter or kitchen serving dish with potting soil and some grass seed. For more decorating ideas and products, visit Ginnys.com or call (800) 487-9024 to request a catalog.

U-Haul Offers 30 Days of Free Storage to Families Affected by Recent Flooding and Damaging Storms Throughout Rhode Island

Pass this along to people affected by the recent flooding in Rhode Island:

The U-Haul Company of Rhode Island is offering 30 days of free storage at more than 15 U-Haul centers throughout Rhode Island to residents whose homes have been affected by damaging storms and flooding.

In addition to the 30-days-free self-storage assistance being offered, people needing boxes can take advantage of the U-Haul Take a Box, Leave a Box Program. The program enables customers to return their reusable boxes and allows others to take them as needed – FREE. U-Haul encourages anyone who has any type of reusable box to drop it off at the nearest U-Haul location and allow another family to reuse the box, free of charge, instead of throwing the reusable box into a recycling bin. U-Haul also has propane available and urges customers to stop in to ensure that their propane tanks are topped off, since propane is a good thing to have on hand when these storms come through.

Families needing more information about the 30-days-free self-storage assistance program should contact the following U-Haul regional office for directions to a U-Haul center closest to their home.

Great Deals at Wal-mart on Danskin Now line

I was just in Wal-Mart on Saturday and decided to see what items were clearance. To my surprise there were FIVE rackes with sportswear for $3 and $5. This included the Danskin Now activewear line which I am fond of for workout gear.

From pants and shorts to tops and tanks there were so many options for $3 bucks. I picked up two tops that were labeled $5 but rang up for $3.

If you have a Wal-Mart nearby - stop in today. I believe they are in between seasons and the clearance is to make way for spring attire. This is probably true for other stores such as Old Navy. Now is a great time to shop and save!

Valentine's Day - A love Story

Love is in the air on Feb. 14, but why? It may have something to do with the 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards that are sent every year to express love and good wishes (according to the U.S. Greeting Card Association).

Although today “Valentine” is synonymous with love, several early Christian martyrs shared the name. The Valentine most closely associated with today’s holiday was a priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd century. The Emperor Claudius II had outlawed marriage, under the theory that married men didn’t make fierce soldiers. When Valentine continued to perform weddings, Claudius had him put to death.

In another version of the story, Valentine attempted to convert Claudius to Christianity while in prison and was executed. In other tales, Valentine healed his jailer’s blind daughter, and the two fell in love. According to legend, Valentine’s final letter to her was signed, “From your Valentine.”

Valentine’s Day began to take off in the late 18th century, when a British publisher brought out a book called The Young Man’s Valentine Writer, full of sentimental poems for lovers unable to compose their own romantic messages.

Better printing technology and lower postal rates combined to make holiday cards more convenient. The first line of Valentine’s Day cards, on embossed paper, was launched in 1847 by Esther Howland, whose father owned a book and stationery store in Worcester, Mass.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.
